What is an Auger Used For?

How Deep Can You Drill with an auger?

Auger is a versatile attachment designed to be mounted on a rotary drilling rig, a piece of construction equipment. It is used for drilling holes in various materials, including soil, clay, and in some cases, soft rock. The depth to which you can drill with an auger depends on several factors, including the power of the drilling rig, the length and design of the auger bit, the material being drilled, and the intended application.


Typically,  augers are used for drilling holes for foundation footings, and utility installations. The standard drilling depth for most augers ranges between 10m to 15m. However, with the right kelly bars, depths of 20m or more can be achieved.


Factors such as the type of soil or rock being drilled, the diameter of the auger bit, and the torque of the rotary drill rig will all impact the achievable depth. For example, drilling in soft, loose soil will allow for greater depths compared to dense clay or rocky , where the auger may struggle or require additional power.


Extensions can be added to the auger to increase its reach, but this may also require greater power and torque from the drilling rig to maintain drilling efficiency and avoid stalling. For deeper drilling projects beyond 15m, more specialized equipment such as drilling rigs or larger  augers may be required.
